Travelling & Mounjaro: Staying on Track on Holiday

Travelling & Mounjaro: Staying on Track on Holiday

Travelling can be one of life’s greatest joys – new sights, new foods, and a well-earned break from routine. However, when taking Mounjaro or any other medication that requires careful storage and timing, holidays necessitate a bit more planning. I’ve been using Mounjaro for a while now. After numerous staycations across the United Kingdom and trips further afield, I’ve picked up some handy tips for keeping your treatment on track without missing out on the fun. And remember, each journey is an adventure waiting to be discovered.

This guide isn’t a substitute for advice from a healthcare professional or your healthcare provider, but it’s full of practical insights from personal experience.

Keeping Mounjaro Safe While Travelling

Regardless of your Mounjaro dose, like many medications, it requires proper storage to maintain its effectiveness. The active ingredient in Mounjaro is temperature-sensitive, so knowing how to store it while travelling is crucial. At home, Mounjaro can be stored in the fridge, but when you’re on the move, things get a little trickier.

Staying on Top of Storage at Home Before Travel

Before you leave, it’s important to know how long you can store Mounjaro weight loss injections in the fridge. Generally, Mounjaro can be kept refrigerated until its expiration date, but once it has been removed from the fridge, the clock starts ticking. Knowing how long Mounjaro can be out of the refrigerator is essential. At room temperature, it can safely last for a limited period – typically up to 28 days – but always check the specific information provided with your prescription.

Storing Mounjaro in its original packaging protects it from light and temperature fluctuations. This also ensures you have all the relevant information handy, such as expiry dates and batch numbers, which can be helpful if you need to speak to a healthcare professional abroad.

Knowing how long can you store Mounjaro in the fridge and how long can Mounjaro be out of the fridge is vital for keeping your treatment effective and safe.

Travelling Short Distances: UK Staycations

For short trips within the United Kingdom, storage is simpler when keeping medication cool when travelling. A brief car journey or train ride usually won’t expose Mounjaro to extreme temperatures. I always pack it in a small insulated Mounjaro travel cooler or cool bag with an ice pack, which helps maintain a steady temperature.

If you’re staying at a hotel, check whether there’s a mini-fridge in the room. Alternatively, a medical fridge may be available at Reception. This can be ideal for storing your injections. Even if there isn’t, a best Mounjaro travel case can keep your medication at a safe temperature for the duration of your stay.

Air Travel: Going Further Afield

Flying abroad introduces a few additional challenges, especially when considering how to keep medication cold on a flight. Airport security can be intimidating when you have medication that needs careful handling. However, keeping medicine cold on airplane, is now easy.

  • Hand luggage vs checked luggage: Always keep your Mounjaro pens in your hand luggage. Checked baggage can be subjected to extreme temperatures in the hold, which might compromise your medication.
  • Airport security: Most airports allow medications through security, but it’s helpful to have a doctor’s note or prescription on hand. Make sure your injections are still in their original packaging. Some travellers find a medication travel cooler with gel packs invaluable, especially for long-haul flights.
  • Time zone changes: If your injection schedule is strict, factor in local time changes to avoid missing a dose or overlapping treatments. Your healthcare provider or a knowledgeable healthcare professional can provide guidance on adjusting your schedule safely.

Eating While Travelling on Mounjaro

One of the joys of travel is sampling local cuisine, and Mounjaro can impact appetite and blood sugar control, especially if you have diabetes, so being mindful while still enjoying yourself is key.

Hotel Breakfasts

Hotel breakfasts often feature a mix of carb-heavy items, such as pastries, toast, and cereals, alongside protein-rich options like eggs, yoghurt, and smoked salmon. On Mounjaro, I’ve found focusing on protein and healthy fats first helps manage blood sugar levels throughout the morning.

  • Pick eggs, beans, or Greek yoghurt over sugary cereals.
  • Include fruit for natural sweetness, but don’t overdo it.
  • Wholegrain bread or oats are better than white bread or croissants if you’re trying to keep your weight loss on track.

Eating Out and All-Inclusive Resorts

Dining out can feel more daunting, especially at all-inclusive resorts where the buffet is seemingly endless. My top tip is to survey the options first.

  • Start with vegetables and lean proteins.
  • Enjoy small portions of richer items you really want, like cheese boards or fried foods.
  • Listen to your body – Mounjaro can reduce appetite, so there’s no need to overeat just because there’s a vast spread.

Sampling Local Treats

One of the highlights of travel is indulging in treats – from scones in a quaint UK tearoom to gelato in Italy or ice cream from the seaside. While Mounjaro helps curb appetite, enjoying these small pleasures is possible:

  • Portion control is your friend. One scone or a small scoop of ice cream is enough to satisfy without derailing your treatment.
  • Share desserts if possible. Sampling is part of the experience, but overindulging can spike blood sugar levels.
  • Pair treats with protein or fibre when possible. For example, have a scone with Greek yoghurt, or enjoy fruit alongside ice cream.

Pub Visits

Pub visits are another classic travel experience. From hearty pies to fish and chips, they can be high in carbs and fats. My advice is:

  • Opt for grilled or roasted options instead of fried foods when possible.
  • Keep alcohol in moderation – it can interfere with blood sugar and weight loss goals.
  • Enjoy the atmosphere and a smaller portion – sometimes, soaking in the environment is just as rewarding as the meal itself.

How Do I Keep on Top of Nutrition When Away?

It is essential to maintain a balanced diet while taking Mounjaro to ensure the treatment works effectively. When on holiday or away from home, it is easy to slip out of routines or find yourself in situations where you may not have access to your usual go-to foods.

So, when away, be mindful and sure to:

  • Avoid processed foods and sugars: Limit the amount of processed foods, drinks, and sugar you consume (such as fizzy drinks, crisps, and biscuits). Instead, seek out a variety of whole foods and protein sources (such as meat, fish, dairy, and whole grains).
  • Stay hydrated: Be sure to drink enough water during your travels to maintain proper hydration levels. This is also essential for weight loss.
  • Stay balanced: Ensure your meals have the necessary foods that make a balanced diet. Try to maintain your smaller portion sizes to support the effectiveness of your weight loss treatment.
  • Plan ahead: Take a look at the types of food available to you on your journey so that you can think ahead about what to eat. It’s also helpful to pack healthy snacks in case you get hungry while travelling.

How Do I Manage My Exercise When Away?

Mounjaro works more effectively when combined with an exercise plan. Don’t worry, there are many ways you can keep on top of your physical fitness when travelling:

  • Pack workout gear: Take a workout outfit or even a yoga mat away with you; this way, you’re already prepared to exercise, whether that’s by the pool, by your bedside, or in an on-site gym.
  • Make use of exercise videos: Many online instructors put together bite-sized workouts you can do with just access to WiFi in the place you’re staying.
  • Sightseeing: Getting out and exploring certainly counts as a workout – get those extra steps in!

Staying Consistent With Mounjaro While Travelling

Consistency is key with Mounjaro. Missing doses or improper storage can reduce effectiveness. Here are some tips I’ve picked up:

  • Set reminders on your phone for injections, especially if you’re in a new time zone.
  • Keep all your Mounjaro in one secure travel case.
  • Check the room temperature in your accommodation.

Managing Medication During Long Trips

Long trips can mean more complex logistics. For instance, if you’re going somewhere hot, humid, or with limited refrigeration:

If your trip is longer than your current supply of medication, arrange for refills in advance to ensure you have enough. Some pharmacies can ship to your destination with proof of prescription and medical need. For example, originally my prescriber was Boots, and I was able to change my pickup location whilst I was travelling.

Treating Yourself Without Losing Momentum

One of the biggest challenges is striking a balance between enjoying oneself and achieving weight loss goals. Travel is meant to be a treat, so it’s okay to indulge occasionally. Remember, it’s all about finding that perfect balance. Mindful eating: Enjoy a treat slowly. Savour the flavour rather than eating quickly out of habit.

  • Mindful eating: Enjoy a treat slowly. Savour the flavour rather than eating quickly out of habit.
  • Balance: If you’ve had a pastry in the morning, aim for a protein-rich lunch or dinner.
  • Social eating: Sharing meals or sampling small portions allows you to enjoy everything without overdoing it.

Even small indulgences, such as an ice cream on the beach or a slice of cake in a café, can be incorporated into your routine without significantly impacting blood sugar levels if paired with other healthy choices.

Travelling Whilst On Mounjaro

Travelling whilst on your Mounjaro weight loss journey doesn’t have to be complicated. With a bit of planning, it’s entirely possible to enjoy your holiday without derailing your Mounjaro routine or your weight loss goals.

Ultimately, being informed, organised, and proactive is the key to making Mounjaro a seamless part of your travel adventures. You can stay on track, keep your medication safe, and enjoy every moment of your holiday.
